Notepad is a survivor. Built into Windows for ages, it's still doing yeoman service as a fast, lightweight, easy-to-use text editor. Prometheus from Flo's Freeware is a Scintilla-based text editor with syntax highlighting. It's called Prometheus because it follows the original Notepad's principles. It's compact and lightweight: The entire program folder is about 766KB. This makes it fast: Prometheus loads quickly. But Prometheus does a whole lot more than Notepad. Despite their many similarities, there really is no comparison: Prometheus is a far more capable tool than Notepad for any text document. But for those who code, Prometheus has much to offer, starting with syntax highlighting but with many more improvements over Notepad, including encoding options, advanced searching and editing tools, selectable (and customizable) syntax schemes (including a second default scheme), and much more. At first glance, Prometheus has a seemingly straightforward user interface, with a toolbar and command buttons across the top, and panels for displaying the records and links. But a closer look revealed confusing command buttons and descriptions. For example, the first button resembled a folder, but the button's description said "Easy work is over." Other button descriptions were just as confusing. We clicked through each button, and the only one that returned results was the recent opened documents button. It listed the file name, creation time, last access time, and link address. The Help feature that comes with the program is in the form of a PDF and we couldn't get it to open. Prometheus is another great example of the type of small but useful portable freeware that can help you tweak, tune, and maintain Windows. It'd be a great addition to a portable USB toolkit, too.
